Photographer, Artist, Designer
My name is Pai Yu Hsuan, known as Bai Pai.
I am a creator who likes to capture the moment, along with my design and art practicing together in everyday life.I use various forms to make my art, photography is one of the mediums, one of the raw materials to document the moment that inspires me. I am particularly craving the relationship between element to element, where I am always in the process of defining and reframing my visual language. The most recent is focus on observing the space between human and object with the places they inhabit.
I have always been passionate about creativity since my childhood, where I mostly drew something unknown. I fell into photography after I borrowed my dad’s camera from time to time until I got a small digital one in my high school. I took almost everything in the early days, both digital and film, sometimes irrelevant, sometimes for document, sometimes for practice, or just the moment I thought it’s interesting to me.
In 2003 summer, I took a workshop in conceptual photography where I learned to use several images to tell stories. After that, I started making a series of images and sometimes it can be part of my art, some other times it can be independent just it be. There were a few years I turned into the film from digital during university, I enjoy the textures that came with the different style lens. I was thinking a lot about the subject matter. At some point I back to digital, and I started moving around the composition more with the software while I studied at the digital images. But I am not trying to refine or perfect an image in beauty. More and more, I couldn’t tell the differences between my philosophy of photography and art.
I continually push my point of view to the edges. There was a time I focus on architecture, I admire the geometric, the line, the shape and the dots that surround us. I used to took the photos for the commercial exteriors but found out I am not into the square but being outside of the box.
One thing I keep doing is that I have always roaming in the streets, in between buildings, the rural areas, an enclosure place, wild landscape to discover the interesting space to document. Sometimes it can be a corner in my home, a random activity during the day, or just stopping by the structure pattern that presenting in front of me.
